How to reduce road noise in the garden & home (on any budget!)

Your home is the place where you feel safest and most comfortable. It is where you return to after a hard day’s work to relax with your family. Your home should be an oasis of calm, away from the noise and disruption of modern life. Unfortunately, for many of us, this is not the case. Urban noise is now a common complaint for homeowners across the UK. Road noise, in particular is an increasing problem, with the UK’s roads becoming ever more congested.

So what can we do about it? Is there a way to significantly reduce road noise in our homes and gardens? Fortunately, the answer is yes. How much noise reduction you can achieve however, will depend a lot on your budget.

If your garden backs onto a busy road, you may think that there is no way you can create a quieter outdoor area. Fortunately for you, there are several ways to reduce garden noise and it doesn’t have to break the bank. The most cost-effective garden noise reduction method is to plant boundary hedging. A thick hedge will muffle road noise, a process called sound attenuation. This is not a quick fix, as most hedging will take around five years to mature. If you’re planning to stay in your home, however, it is an effective way to reduce garden noise.

A slightly more expensive method is to install a noise reducing fence. Acoustic fences work in the opposite way to hedges by deflecting noise instead of absorbing it. The higher the better is the general rule of thumb (planning permission permitted). If you really want to reduce garden noise, the most effective method is to erect a wall. A stone or brick wall works in the same way as a fence but is usually more expensive.

At Newview, we have a wealth of experience in reducing home noise. As an official partner of the Heathrow Noise Insulation Scheme, we have helped thousands of homeowners who live around Heathrow to enjoy a better standard of living by creating a quieter home environment.

Our selection of soundproof windows are designed to reduce exterior noise volumes penetrating the home. When combined with secondary glazing, they can provide insulation levels up to 40 decibels. Soundproof or acoustic windows also help to create a warmer, more energy efficient home. Their enhanced insulation levels reduce heat loss, helping you to save money on lower heating bills.

If exterior noise is having a negative impact on your life, Newview can help. If you’d like to find out more about our range of soundproof windows, get in touch today. Call us on 01903 244 449 or send us a message online.
